Alumni Profile: Devin Osorio

Devin Osorio is a first-generation Dominican American visual artist born in New York and raised in Washington Heights. Devin joined NYC Salt in 6th grade and spent 7 years in our after-school photography program.

Through Salt, a connection was made to Diane Von Furstenburg’s studio, where Devin interned and met students from SCAD and Central Saint Martins, opening a pathway to higher education.

Devin graduated with a BFA in Fibers from the Savannah College of Art and Design in 2015 and went on to become a Salt Emerging Artist from 2020–2022. Their work has been exhibited in Mexico City, Madrid, London, NYC, and at Charlie James Gallery in LA for their first solo show in 2022. Devin’s paintings blend Dominican cultural traditions with personal biography and can be found in collections such as Beth DeWoody and Xiao Museum in China.

“Growing up I did not think I would go to college… Salt helped me realize that doing something creative could be turned into a job. I met all kinds of people in creative jobs and through getting to know these people I came to realize that creativity and money were not mutually exclusive. If I had never been in Salt, I would be surviving instead of living right now.”

Devin currently lives and works in Mexico City as a full-time artist. Their story is one of many that shows how NYC Salt helps students find creative careers and opportunities for higher education.
