NYC Salt embarked on an enlightening journey to the MET Photograph Conservation Department, delving into the intricate world of photographic preservation and conservation. Led by expert guides, our students were treated to a hands-on exploration of historical photographic materials and time-based media conservation techniques.
During the visit, students were introduced to the fascinating process of classifying photographic materials based on the techniques used throughout history. From daguerreotypes to cyanotypes, the diverse array of materials provided a comprehensive overview of the evolution of photography.
In addition to traditional formats, the students were immersed in the realm of time-based media conservation, gaining insights into the preservation of formats such as cassettes, LaserDiscs, U-Matic, and more. This holistic approach broadened their understanding of the challenges and strategies involved in conserving both analog and digital media.
One of the highlights of the visit was the opportunity to explore glitch art, a unique form of digital manipulation that transforms images into abstract, fragmented compositions. With the guidance of MET staff, our students experimented with glitching techniques, breathing new life into classic and contemporary photographs alike.
The experience was nothing short of extraordinary, leaving our students inspired and eager for future explorations. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Nora and the entire Photograph Conservation Department at The MET for their invaluable expertise, dedication, and hospitality.
As we reflect on this remarkable visit, we look forward to continued collaborations and the opportunity to delve deeper into the captivating world of photographic conservation.
